PS3 Needs Adaptor To Play PSOne/PS2 Titles

<from Trusted Reviews>

Much like Sony, the PS3 is a troubled beast. Development muddles, heavyweight pricing and the all round competence and timeliness of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and innovation of Nintendo’s terribly titled Wii have left it in a bit of a mire. Now here’s another glitch.

Despite long being touted as being backwards compatible with both PSOne and PS2 titles (a major selling point), it now comes to light that a separate external ‘adaptor’ will be required to makes things tick. To quote a new blurb from the official website:

To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PLAYSTATION 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card

Ok, point number one: what? Point number two: you’re joking? Point number three: the 60GB edition of the PS3 has integrated memory card readers and you didn’t think to include a PS2/PSone memory card slot? After all, they’re made by you and have only been the biggest selling consoles in the last ten years!

All this, my friends, ultimately smacks of more developmental woe. Surely to begin with an internal solution was proposed but somewhere along the line it failed and with the external design finalised and shown off to the whole world Sony couldn’t/wouldn’t go back to the drawing board.

In all, I don’t really mind too much because it’s only an adaptor and it will let us play the old games. Furthermore, this is Sony and surely it wouldn’t exclude such an essential piece of kit from the bundle just to cream off a few more dollars because that would be so out of character
